Chapter 5

Phoebe stood outside the door to Rick’s apartment. The last time she had been here, she had been too excited and satisfied to realize he lived in the penthouse. Well, she doubted that would really have stopped her. He buzzed her up and she got into the elevator.

It had been one week since the incident outside her apartment. One week in which Phoebe had been unable to stop thinking about what had happened. As for Rick, he made no move after that day, acting so professional towards her she wanted to jump on his back and bite his ear off. It seemed like he was waiting for her to make a move, and she was hoping he did so she didn’t have to.

Today made it two weeks since she started working for him. Yesterday, Amanda had called her down to HR to inform her that her employment had been extended for six months, pending the time when Rick’s old assistant resumed back at the office. Amanda had also told her that she could be retained as a permanent staff if all things went well during the six-month trial.

The elevator finally stopped at the penthouse and she got out to find him waiting for her. He was wearing a sky-blue shirt and stonewashed jeans and Phoebe wondered if he always dressed so impeccably or only when he knew she could see him. She got out of the elevator, walking past him and into the house. The building looked different to her in the daylight. There was no doubt that a lot of money had been spent in furnishing it. From the art on the wall to the tables and chairs and entertainment unit that took a whole wall of the living room.

She turned around and looked at him. He sat down on a couch, regarding her with a small smile on his face. Almost as if he knew what she was about to do. But he kept quiet, waiting for her to make the first move.

“If we are going to do this, then I no longer work for you or your company.” Phoebe looked up at him, a little unnerved when he still did not speak. Just kept looking at her. “I don’t want to be with the woman who sleeps with the boss.”

“In a way, you still kind of are.” Phoebe did not crack a single smile as she stared down at him. “I see you lost your sense of humor.”

“Well, I’m still trying to figure out if I’m making the biggest mistake of my life here.”

“Then maybe you shouldn’t do it then,” he replied her.

“Yeah? Like it is that easy.” Phoebe scoffed. “Every day reminding myself all the reasons why I can’t jump on your bones and take a big bite like I want to.”

“And what has been stopping you?” he asked her and Phoebe looked at him, a tentative look on her face as if she was trying to choose her words.

“Fear I guess.” He kept quiet and she continued.
